CD534

23rd October 2020

Highways England

CD534 is a newly released document that has replaced HA104:09. It has been published by Highways England and calls for higher than previously accepted skid resistance performance from newly installed ironwork.

Proving skid resistance under the now withdrawn HA104/09 document was shown by subjecting ironwork to a PSRV (polished skid resistance value) test where a swinging pendulum would indicate resistance when striking the top pattern of the ironwork under evaluation. Typically values of 45 to 70 would be obtained depending on the type of access cover being tested.

Under the new document CD534 the allowable PSRV figures are more tightly controlled and it is made clear that a new skid resistance test (known as WRc test) is seen as more representative and now preferred.

Under CD534 skid resistance values must be:

Low risk areas eg pavements: PSRV 45+ / WRc 0.62+

High risk areas eg carriageways: PSRV 60+ / WRc 0.83+

Durey Castings are currently working with manufacturers to test all ranges of covers to the WRc test. This is continuing over the next few months and hope to have it completed soon.

As usual, Durey Castings are well aware of the document’s requirements and our responsibilities under it. Our customers can rest assured we are ‘on it’, ensuring our products fully conform and will exceed any requirements the authorities will insist on. That experience and assuredness is all part of the ‘DureyService’.
